The Caesars of the Bible
"Jesus then said "Pay back Caesars things to Caesar but God's things to God"" (Mark 12: 17)
When the Pharisees and party followers of Herod, tried to trick Jesus into making an incriminating statement, Jesus replied with the famous words quoted above.
But which Caesar was he referring to?
Altogether 12 Caesars of Rome reigned during the period covered by the Christian Greek Scriptures and are referred to many times either by name or by title (eg Lu 23:2, Joh 19:15, Mt 22:17,Lu 2:1).
The power and influence of these men is hard to comprehend by modern standards.
Their word was law and to attract their disfavor could result in immediate death.
A basic knowledge of the Caesars of the first century is useful to the Bible student as these men were involved in Bible history and prophesy, and had an enormous impact of the lives of the early Christians.

In 63 BCE Syria and Palestine became Roman provinces and set the scene for the early life of Jesus.
Augustus Caesar (63 BCE – 14 CE)
"Now in those days a decree went forth from Caesar Augustus for all the inhabited earth to be registered"
(Luke 2:1)
Tiberius Caesar ( 42 BCE – 37 CE)
"In the 15th year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea and Herod was district ruler of Galilee".
(Luke 3:1)
Claudius (10 BCE – 54 CE)
"And he found a certain Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus who had recently come from Italy ... because of the fact that Claudius had ordered all the Jews to depart from Rome"
(Acts 18: 2)
Nero (37 CE – 68 CE)
"Then Festus, after speaking with the assembly of counselors, replied "To Caesar you (Paul) have appealed; to Caesar you shall go""
(Acts 25:12).
The Caesar being referred to was Nero.
